Our Musical Director: Roger Sansom
I grew up in the Bristol area and was inspired to follow a musical path from many great and inspirational teachers within The County of Avon Music Service, of which I was a member of their County groups: CASO, ASSWB and ASP.
After completing a Music Degree at Kingston University, I worked as a professional musician around the London area, touring Europe before moving back to the Bristol area to pursue Band and Solo Work. Over the next few years I found a new passion: teaching music, and from there found many opportunities to work in different fields within education including running and conducting ensembles.
I enjoy rehearsing and performing many different styles of music and have a particular interest in promoting exciting original contemporary wind band works alongside movie, musical, and rock and pop arrangements to provide an exciting and varied programme for the listener.
I am a full-time teacher for the West of England Music Alliance (WEMA) and run other ensembles including: North Somerset Centre for Young Musicians; Musical Director of SoGYJO (South Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra); Co Conductor of the South Gloucestershire Youth Wind Band. I also work with several WEMA Orchestras.
I still enjoy playing in bands, and am a member of the Mike Hoddinott Blues Allstars, Vintage Funk and Ska Band ‘Traps’, and Latin Boogaloo Group ‘The Shingalings’.
I am very excited about the opportunity to work with Westerly Winds. They are a great, friendly and talented group and have made me feel very welcome. It’s exciting to start a new chapter in my musical career leading adults for the very first time! I need to thank the previous Director Andy for all his amazing work and repertoire choices, which has made slotting into this role a simple one.
Here’s to dedicated rehearsing, amazing playing and fabulous concerts!
